Facility Picture

The Fargo Medical Center (VAM) provides medical care and services through the Veterans Health Administration to veterans residing in North Dakota, western Minnesota and northern South Dakota. The Medical Center is a general medical/surgical/psychiatric facility with 59 acute beds and an attached 50-bed Transitional Care Unit (TCU) providing extended care. Veterans are referred to the VAMC Minneapolis for tertiary care. Scarce medical specialty services are provided through contracts for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), diagnostic radiology, radiation therapy and orthopedics.

The Medical Center also supports four Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) located in Bismarck, Grafton, and Minot North Dakota and Fergus Falls Minnesota. During the last two years, outpatient visits for the Medical Center and the CBOCs have steadily increased to well over 100,000 for each year. The Medical Center had over 2,000 admissions into the hospital each year over the last two years. The TCU provides extended care through admissions of over 400 patients each year during the past two years.

The VA Medical Center (VAMC) employs 780 employees with an annual budget of approximately $108 Million for medical care. An active research program and a successful academic affiliation with the University of North Dakota School of Medical and Health Sciences are maintained. It supports residencies in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Surgery, and provides training to allied health professionals. The VAMC is a member of the Veterans Integrated Service Network 23 (VISN 23), which includes the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, western Wisconsin, western Illinois, northern Kansas, northern Missouri, and eastern Wyoming.
