VA Puget Sound Health Care System is the largest referral medical center in the Northwest Network and is part of the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 20, which includes facilities in Anchorage, Boise, Portland, Roseburg, Spokane, Seattle/Tacoma, Walla Walla, and White City. VISN 20 comprises 23% of the US landmass. In fiscal year 2010, VA Puget Sound cared for more than 80,000 patients and conducted more than 856,000 outpatient visits.  

VA Puget Sound has active affiliations with the University of Washington Medical School.  Over 700 University residents, interns, and students are trained at VA Puget Sound each year.  There are also many nursing school affiliations and more than 50 additional educational institution affiliations in dentistry, pharmacy, social work, and psychology.
