The Las Vegas Facility became a VA Medical Center in June 1993 as a result of the VA/AF Joint venture which is a 118-bed facility. The Nellis Federal Hospital was activated on August 1994. The VA occupies 52 inpatient beds that provide medical, surgical, intensive and psychiatric care. The Nellis Federal Hospital is a secondary care medical facility capable of reducing the number of veteran beneficiaries who have in the past had to be transferred to other VAMCs for inpatient care. The Las Vegas VAMC is located in one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States. The area supports a veteran population of approximately 200,000. In FY95 the workload surpassed 125,000 OPV and projections for FY96 indicate workload with exceed 138.000 OPV.
A new addition to the Veteran's Health Service System is the new replacement Ambulatory Care Center, currently under construction. Scheduled for completion in February 1997, this 149,000 sq. ft. facility will be three times the size of the present building and is a welcomed addition to the Southern Nevada and VA Healthcare network.
